This is achieved through a variety of extraction processes and solvents, the most common being butane. Advancements in extraction technology have enabled the use of other solvents like carbon dioxide and pure hydrocarbons in a process that utilizes pressure in a safe closed-loop system.
The end product is a highly potent oil of varying consistencies most popularly used for vaporization and dabbing. Shatter, with its flawless amber glass transparency, has a reputation for being the purest and cleanest type of extract. The reason shatter comes out perfectly clear has to do with the molecules which, if left undisturbed, form a glass-like appearance. Cannabis wax refers to the softer, opaque oils that have lost their transparency after extraction. Unlike those of transparent oils, the molecules of cannabis wax crystallize as a result of agitation.
Just as transparent oils span the spectrum between shatter and sap, wax can also take on different consistencies based on heat, moisture, and the texture of the oil before it is purged the process in which residual solvents are removed from the product. Every step of the extraction process demands a balance of art and science, beginning with the selection of starting material and ending with the purging and storage process.

Cannabis 5 differences between cannabis concentrates and flower. One of the most beautiful and photogenic types of marijuana products on the market right now is shatter, also colloquially called shatter wax, shatter weed, or marijuana shatter. So what is shatter? The term shatter specifically refers to a specific texture of translucent cannabis concentrate that breaks and shatters like glass. Cannabis extracts are created by passing a solvent, such as butane, hexane, isopropyl, or CO2, through cured or fresh cannabis material that has been thoroughly ground.
What Are Cannabis Oil, Shatter, and Wax Extracts?
Next, the solvent is purged from the shatter oil using heat and vacuum. The resulting cannabis concentrate is then processed into one of a number of potential forms, including wax, crumble, honeycomb, sap, budder, live resin, and of course, shatter. With a potency ranging between percent cannabinoids by weight, marijuana extracts like shatter are a fast, efficient, smoke-free way to consume cannabis.
Dabbing is the more traditional way to use marijuana shatter. The shatter will rapidly vaporize upon contact with the hot surface. For most practical purposes, there is little difference between shatter and other forms of marijuana extract. They are consumed in the same ways and largely have the same potency range.
Most differences between cannabis extract types then are cosmetic. Shatter is an amber or gold color and is transparent to some degree. The reason shatter concentrate is semi-clear has to do with the molecules in the extracted cannabis oil.
In shatter, these molecules are all stacked nice and neat in straight rows, one on top of the other. This molecular alignment allows light to pass through the marijuana extract and gives the shatter its glass-like properties. Heat, moisture, and high terpene content can affect the texture and extraction, which may turn extracted oils into a runnier substance that resembles sap but retaining its translucent appearance.
Concentrates other than shatter and sap are whipped, stirred, or shaken at various times during the process, agitating the individual molecules in the mixture and causing their cloudy appearance. Shatter is not agitated which accounts for its translucency. However, once the molecules in the cannabis oil are disrupted, usually by whipping, stirring, or shaking the oil during processing, they form irregular structures that are more opaque and let less light through.
This is why the transparency of shatter vs wax is so different. When the oil is agitated, you get opaque wax or similar cannabis concentrates instead of the clear concentrates found as shatter. So why is shatter called shatter? Compared to other extracts, shatter is incredibly hard. When it breaks, it will often crack and well… shatter when pressure is applied to it.
Especially on a cold day, shatter can crack violently, sending shards of shatter off in every direction. In that sense, shatter is very much like glass. This is even more true when shatter is in a thick slab. A main benefit of dabbing shatter is that it offers an incredibly fast method for cannabinoids to enter the bloodstream, offering near instantaneous effects.
Dabbing shatter means you no longer need to inhale large amounts of burning plant material to get the effects you want.Shatter is a type of marijuana that has been around for many years but is becoming more well-known as more state legalize marijuana and the cannabis curious begin to experiment. Shatter is essentially a concentrate of marijuana. In states where recreational marijuana is legal, some types can be found at dispensaries.
The resulting concentrates can hold up to 80 percent cannabinoid concentration, making it much more potent than most strains of marijuana. Marijuana typically has a cannabinoid concentration of around 10 to 12 percent. When making marijuana concentrates, a solvent is used to extract the psychoactive chemicals in the marijuana bud. These solvents are typically butane, carbon dioxide or propane. There are other forms of concentrates. Many experienced marijuana users would likely tell first-time users the best way to use shatter is to not use shatter.
The nail, typically made of titanium, quartz or ceramic, is heated to a high temperature sometimes with a butane torch and then a piece of shatter is applied using a metal pin to the end of the nail. The resulting smoke is inhaled through the rig. As noted, shatter is legal in places such as Colorado and Washington. Other cities and states have considered making laws addressing the legality of concentrates. Make sure to check on your local laws.
Also, just as importantly, understand that if you are simply looking for a relaxed high or a little energy boost from marijuana, shatter is going to give you much more than that. While the potency of wax and shatter is similar it depends on the starting materialthe physical difference between the two has remained a mystery… until now.
Check out our findings. There are a number of variables one can manipulate that will affect the texture of hash oil. Physical agitation, temperature changes and moisture can all cause a translucent oil to change into an opaque wax. The agitation causes the THCAwhich is a solid, to precipitate from the rest of the oil and crystallize.
The change from translucent to opaque is the hash oil changing from a single-phase substance transparent extracts to a multiphasic, amorphous substance wax and budder. This is some pretty hefty materials science jargon. A great analogy for the process of making hash oil is making hard candy.
If the process is disturbed or the candy gets affected during transport and storage, crystals can form in the hard candy. It becomes opaque, has a weak, irregular structure and goes bad more quickly. Why do the crystals form? If you stir the solution while it is cooking or setting, some of the sugar molecules will bump into each other and crystallize, becoming a half gooey, half crunchy mess, instead of a clean translucent hard candy.
A bubble, a notch in the container or any irregularity can cause nucleation of the sugar molecules around a nucleation point. The sugar than crystallizes outwardly from there and from any nucleation point. This process is analogous to the transformation of shatter into wax.
In shatter, the cannabinoids in their natural acid formsterpenes and waxes are all mixed together in one phase and in a way that allows light to pass through the molecular structure, just like hard candy. When it becomes wax or budder, the cannabinoids crystallize around each other and separate from the terpenes and waxes.
This mixture of phases does not allow light to pass through and can have anything from a dry crumbly texture to a peanut butter consistency.
Hash oil is a solution of various compounds found in the cannabis plant and many things can affect how its extract will turn out.THC-A diamonds to be exact. At 99 to percent potency diamonds are the cannabis equivalent of Everclear actually, the grain alcohol is only about 95 percent pure alcohol. Most flowers top out at about 25 percent THC. Now if you take that distilled wine and keep distilling it, you end up with a more refined product. This is taking some of the guesswork out of medicating from batch to batch for some because of the product very consistent in strength and purity.
Some users also like adding a bit of THC-A crystal to shatter or wax, pumping up the cerebral high and adding more flavor.
Kinda like adding a shot of espresso to your chai. Think of diamonds or crystals as the essence of the cannabis plant. The tradeoff, like grain alcohol, is the lack of flavor or terpenes.

What Is Shatter Weed? [The Definitive Guide]
A dab is a common name used to categorize many cannabis concentrates that require a dab or oil rig to smoke it. The most common types of dabs are solvent concentrates such as shatter, wax, resin or types of hash oil.
Britannica defines a solvent as: a substance, ordinarily a liquid, in which other materials dissolve to form a solution.
So as you can see, these concentrates use a solvent in order to extract the THC, valuable cannabinoids and terpenes from the marijuana plant. If a concentrate utilizes a solvent to be created it is referred to as an extract. All extracts are concentrates but not all concentrates are extracts. Popular solvents used for extraction include CO2, butane, propane and ethanol. Most of these solvents are highly-flammable and have dangerous consequences if not used properly or without proper safety measures in place.
Learn about terpene profiles, rosin tech, ethanol extraction, and BHO tech with a behind the scenes tour of KrystaLeaves, extraction and production facility. Concentrates that require no solvent to be created are referred to as solventless concentrates. These types of concentrates are byproducts that come straight from the cannabis plant and buds themselves like kief and hash.
While different types of cannabis concentrates might seem to run together, they are each quite distinct and different. Kief, also known as sift, is the most basic of the THC concentrates.
If you own a grinder with a screen and small reservoir at the bottom, known as a kief catcher, you are probably familiar with this type of concentrate. There is finger hash, bubble hash and hash from the grinder.
Because hash is made strictly from trichomesit breaks apart easy and extremely sticky. To make hash, THC rich trichomes are separated from the cannabis plant and condensed with high temperature and pressure. It is highly potent. Rosin is a sticky substance created when heat and compression meet a bud of cannabis flower. Unlike hash which is made with just trichomes, rosin is made with the entire cannabis bud.Floridas first dispensary brand, Trulieve is now offering its cannabis patients shatter, or TruShatter.

By many, shatter, wax or dabs is considered one of the purest forms of concentrates. It is delicate and can get messy, think melting taffy. There are typically two ways to smoke shatter. Similar to a bong, a dab rig is a glass pipe. The user would need a blow torch, yes blow torch, or electric element to heat the nail to — degrees Fahrenheit. Then, a piece of the shatter, or dab, is placed on a dabbing tool and touched to the nail. It gets vaporized instantly and is easily inhaled. With the high concentration of cannabis, one dab can result in an very intense effect, like sit down.
It can be overwhelming for first-timers who are seasoned as well. Once the concentrate is in place, screw the mouthpiece back on the unit. There are a few well renowned makers of wax pens that have been around for a while including Dr Dabberand Puffco, maker of the Puffco Pro 2. Pens are a much safer way than using the torch.
